General Secretary, Ms. Melanie Vallun representing the South African Institute of Valuers attended Department of Higher Education and Training’s International Colloquium on the Development of a Regulatory Framework for Stakeholder Interaction, Coordination and Collaboration in Post-School Education and Training on South Africa.

Melanie reports:
“Only a few hours into the discussions it became abundantly clear that the supply of graduates who lack practical experience thereby impacting their ability to become readily employable, is not restricted to the Valuation Profession alone. Reasons provided for this phenomenon includes tertiary institutions who previously presented “practical” qualifications have since discontinued this practice and thereby effectively relinquishing the responsibility of practical experience to the individual and/or the employer/s.
The perception that graduates are unemployable is unquestionably real and as a result of the fact that tertiary institutions that are potentially not serving the interest of the public / economy and the country.

The world of education & training and the world of economy are not uniquely paralleled. Employable graduates do not refer to the rate of graduate employment but rather correctly qualified (including experience) and correctly placed graduates within the economy given the supply of and demand for these graduates.”
